Sophronia Pomeroy

Sophronia (the lst wife of Daniel Spencer) was born in
West Stockbridge, Berkshire County Massachusetts on June 21, 1806. Her
father, Grove Pomeroy (1763-1830) was a farmer and served -in the Revolutionary
War. 'Her mother was Eunice Marsh (1768-1823), She was the tenth child
'born in the family of eleven children. The family resided in Berkshire
County, in western Massachusetts, notably the town of New Moroboro and
West Stockbridge. They also resided in Connecticut and Pennsylvania.
In West Stockbridge her father was active in civic affairs and was a
member of the Massachusetts State Assembly for one term (1801-1802).
At age 17, Sophronia married Daniel (age 29) on January 21, .1823 in
West Stockbridge. Prior to their marriage, Daniel erected a large storehouse
with a ballroom inside. On the day of their marriage a wedding reception
was held in the ballroom. A large group of friends and relatives were
present. Following the reception the building was dedicated as a ballroom
and a Masonic Hall. Sophronia and Daniel remained in this town where
he was active in the mercantile business. After a short illness Sophronia
(age 21) died on October 5, 1832. She is buried in the Village Cemetery
of West Stockbridge, where her gravestone spells her name Saphronie.
